How to build a preventive home maintenance calendar you'll actually follow

By Bruno Correa · 9/26/2026

Most homeowners only think about maintenance the moment something stops working. By then, the filter that should've been changed months ago has already strained the system, or the small leak that could've been caught early has already damaged a wall.

What a preventive calendar actually needs

  1. Group by frequency, not by room — monthly, quarterly, and yearly tasks behave differently and need different reminders.
  2. Attach a task to a trigger, not a vague season — HVAC filter every 90 days is trackable, spring cleaning isn't.
  3. Include the boring stuff — smoke detector batteries, water heater flushing, gutter checks. Nothing exciting, everything expensive if skipped.
  4. Review yearly — appliances get replaced, warranties expire, the list needs updating.
